Volunteering is often thought of as a selfless act to benefit others, but in reality, it’s often just as rewarding for the volunteers as it is for those they’re donating their time to.
Kathleen Munday, Lifestyle Coordinator at Regis Sandgate-Lucinda, has worked with Regis Aged Care for nearly eight years and has seen first-hand the difference that volunteers can make.
“It is truly amazing,” she said. “Whether it’s just sitting for a chat or a cuppa, playing cards, or simply just taking a walk together, it has a positive impact. I have witnessed a lot of our residents form new and lasting friendships with our volunteers.”
In an aged care setting, where feelings of isolation and loneliness are common, volunteers can help through social interactions, recreational activities, or assisting with practical needs.
“We are always looking to fill a variety of volunteer positions,” Kathleen said. “These roles can range from transporting residents to assisting with group activities such as sip and paint or calling out numbers for our weekly bingo games.”
Not only do these types of activities improve the quality of life for residents, but they also give volunteers the opportunity to learn new skills, share common interests and reap the rewards that come with bringing joy to others. And, it’s not just people who can volunteer.
The Special Role of Animal Therapy
“Animal therapy is marvellous,” Kathleen said. “It encourages engagement, conversations, reminiscing, laughter and movement in the form of pats and ‘paw-shakes’.”
Volunteer Carol and her Golden Retriever Emma have been volunteering at Regis Sandgate for almost two years and are a weekly highlight for residents, family members and staff alike.
“I get more enjoyment seeing the sheer joy on the residents’ faces than I could have ever imagined,” she said. “It’s rewarding to see their smiles and watch them come alive when Emma enters their room.”
Kathleen is incredibly grateful for all of the volunteers who have spent time at Regis.
“I would be lost without the kindness of our volunteers,” she said. “They are all so amazing to give their time.
“If you would like to offer some support, your involvement could really lift the spirits of someone who really needs it.”
