Excitement is building at Deagon Boxing Club as three determined fighters prepare to step into the ring at the Urban Warfare Boxing Tournament on Saturday, 7 March, on the Gold Coast.
The local gym aims to showcase its rising talent, with each boxer ready to represent the community in the ring.
Meet the Fighters and Their Motivation
Wil Heinemann, who started boxing in 2022, said he always wanted to be a fighter because his father was a Muay Thai fighter.
“After the first session, I fell in love with boxing and everything about it and knew that’s what I wanted to do,” Wil said. “Boxing has made me a better, fitter and stronger man over the past few years and benefited me in many ways and has brought many good people into my life.”
Sonny Jack James said his interest in the sport began early.
“My favourite boxer was Mike Tyson, and he really inspired me to want to become something in the sport,” Sonny said. “Boxing helps me to stay healthy both mentally and physically, which is why I love the sport so much.”
For Jacob-Lee Bennett Bull, boxing has been about building confidence and resilience. Since starting at 17, he has won three of four corporate fights.
“One of the many reasons I do boxing is because I love the sport,” he said. “It’s good for my mental health and it’s one of the few things I’m passionate about. My goals are to compete in Australia and have my name well known, then maybe one day have my own boxing club.”
