Families will be able to get up close with Australian wildlife when Ranger Stacey and the D’Aguilar Wildlife team return to Sandgate this Easter.
Two Wildlife Safari shows will be held at The Sands Bowlo on 17 April, featuring presentations from D’Aguilar Wildlife director Ben Bawden, who has more than 20 years’ experience working with native animals.
He said the animal that surprised him most was the koala, particularly their response to fresh eucalyptus.
“They sleep 20 hours a day, so seeing so much excitement and activity in their little bodies as they worked out the best way to get the tastiest leaves was just magic,” Ben said. “We now have the largest group of ambassador koalas that travel to locations in Australia.”
He said reptiles were also commonly misunderstood.
“One of the biggest misunderstandings we encounter is the feel of our reptiles – many assume they are wet and slimy, but all our reptiles are soft and dry,” he said. “Being wet wouldn’t help them keep their bodies nice and warm.”
Connecting Communities with Nature
Ben said that as people become disconnected from nature, up-close encounters are vital to ensuring these species survive for another million years.
“We visit locations all over Queensland, and this disconnect is not just in urban areas; it is statewide,” he said. “We all need to take on the project of making sure we all get out, connect with nature and natural spaces and grow that passion.”
