Sandgate’s historic Town Hall Bakery is up for sale, with its current owners choosing to step back to spend more time with their young family.
Many locals know the Sandgate Village bakery for its old-world charm – the chime of the door, the smell of warm bread, and the cabinets lined with hot pies, fresh sandwiches and colourful sweets.
Owner Harry Nguyen said the decision to sell came down to family.
“We need more time for our children,” Harry said.
“My wife and I just welcomed a new baby, and we have an eight-year-old daughter, who I hardly get to see.
“She’s in bed when I leave for work in the morning and in bed when I come home at night.”
Mr Nguyen and his wife have owned the business for more than seven years, after he first worked part-time in a bakery while studying in Australia as an overseas student.
In April 2017, they decided to open one of their own.
A Beloved Local Legacy
“We love Sandgate,” Harry said. “My favourite memories are serving the local people – especially making early morning coffees for the cyclists who roll through town.”
The family hopes a fellow local will take over the business and continue its legacy, even offering a transition period to help new owners settle into bakery life.
When asked which products locals have loved most over the years, the father of two said with a smile, “It would have to be the salad roll or the scones”.
