The Sandgate Historical Museum is celebrating all things love with a special exhibition featuring wedding attire from Sandgate’s past.
Commencing last month and running until mid-April, the ‘Century of Love…Weddings, Fashions, and Traditions’ exhibit features an assortment of bridal gowns and flower girl dresses, guest lists, and other marital objects from the 19th and 20th centuries. The display also includes photos and stories from weddings taking place in the Sandgate area, some over 100 years old.
Sandgate Historical Society volunteer Cheryl Aldridge, who is coordinating the museum display, said there would be a showcase of wedding attire as early as 1862, all the way to the 1980s.
“We have beautiful trousseau items, jewellery and bridal gifts to admire,” Cheryl said.
“The bouquets, the churches, the reception venues and the wedding cake. Keep an eye out for the beautiful fabric shoes!”
Cheryl said that attendees would be able to get up close to view “the materials of yesteryear – to the invitations and toast list”.
Historic Love Stories and Community Contributions
“It is quite the wedding affair on display with lots of stories of families’ weddings, featuring the Tucker family and their double weddings,” she said.
The Tuckers were a well-known family in Bald Hills. In the early 20th century, four Tucker sisters were married in two double weddings, one in 1902 and another in 1907. Ethel, one of the sisters, married into the Carseldine family. Wedding photos of the sisters will be included in the museum display.
Another highlight of the exhibition features the 50th wedding anniversary of Ivy (née Choyce) and Ted Chapman, which they celebrated after moving to the Sandgate area.
“We kindly thank those who have reached out to help provide for this wonderful Century of Love…Weddings, Fashions, and Traditions’ display,” Cheryl said.
“We are a not-for-profit organisation and rely on donations and our members.”
The Sandgate Historical Museum has extended its opening hours for the duration of the display, welcoming visitors until 5 April on Wednesdays and Sundays from 9am to 3pm, with additional Saturday openings in March from 11am to 2pm.
Tickets to the event are being sold at the door, and the cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children.
