Gateball, a strategic team sport, is gaining popularity across Australia, with local opportunities for players at all skill levels to get involved.

This month, the Moreton Bay Gateball Club will host its annual tournament at The Sands Bowlo in Sandgate, the first time the event will be held at this venue.

Warren Dowse, President of the Moreton Bay Gateball Club and newly appointed Gateball Coordinator for Queensland, said one of the sport’s biggest strengths was its accessibility.

“The rules are easy to learn, the equipment is lightweight, and the game doesn’t rely on strength or speed, making it suitable for all ages and abilities,” Warren said.

“Gateball is a social, low-impact team sport that blends the simple striking action of croquet/golf with the strategy of chess and the teamwork of bowls. It’s played on a rectangular grass or synthetic court using Gateball sticks, ten numbered balls, three small gates (or hoops), and a goal pole in the centre.”

The game involves two teams of up to five players each, competing to score points by guiding their balls through three gates and hitting the goal pole. Players earn bonus shots when their ball strikes another, which can be used to help teammates or set up defensive plays.

Warren explained that the matches were played to a time limit, usually around 30-minutes, ensuring a fast-moving and exciting game.

“With every point counting, tactics can change quickly and teams often mount late comebacks,” he said.

Moreton Bay Gateball Tournament and Local Sessions

The Moreton Bay Gateball Club’s tournament, to be held from 14 to 16 March, will attract players from Queensland, New South Wales, Adelaide, Western Australia, and Victoria.

“The event will showcase Gateball at a high level, featuring strong competition and skilled teams of players aged from nine to 94,” Warren said. “Experienced officials will be on hand throughout the tournament to help explain the different tactics, strategies, and key moments of play, allowing spectators to better understand the game.

“By showcasing the Sands Bowlo during this tournament, we hope to strengthen our case to secure the Gateball National Championships in 2027.”

Moreton Bay Gateball Club also holds sessions at The Sands Bowlo on Wednesdays at 6pm, aimed at players of all skill levels.

“Clubs often run them as inclusive, social sessions where newcomers can learn the game, practice, and enjoy the community aspect without pressure,” Warren said.

The cost of participation is $10 per person.
