Sandgate RSL Sub Branch members are encouraging the community to come together for ANZAC Day on Saturday, 25 April, to honour the courage, sacrifice and mateship of all who have served Australia.

In World War I, the ANZAC spirit came to define troops of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and continues to inspire people 111 years on.

The Sandgate Dawn Service and March is an opportunity for veterans, their families and the community to recognise the contributions of all defence personnel in wars, conflicts, peacekeeping and other operations.

For the first time in many years, the Sandgate March along Brighton Road will be reviewed by a member of the Royal Australian Air Force, Group Captain Simon Sauer AM, CSC.

After the march, police and military vehicles including two Hawkei Protected Mobility vehicles will park on Keogh Street for the community to inspect, while games of two-up will be held at the Sub Branch.

The Living Legacy: Personal Reflections on the ANZAC Spirit

Sandgate RSL Sub Branch President John Anderson said there was a real buzz and intimacy felt at local ANZAC Day events.

“We believe there is no greater way to honour the ANZACs than by coming together and commemorating,” he said.

Lieutenant Colonel Anderson is still serving in the Australian Army and last year was his first time providing the ANZAC Day Dawn Service Address and leading the march at Sandgate.

“It was one of the most professionally satisfying things that I have done,” he said.

“I had the opportunity to talk to ex-servicemen and women about courage, mateship and the positive impact of the ANZAC spirit I’ve felt, experienced and aspired to during my 36-year career.

“There were thousands of people from the public and I made it relevant for them too.

“The ANZAC spirit is a legacy that lives on in all of us. It’s about being there for your mates, giving back to your community and remembering those who went before you.

“It’s also important that service men and women get to see how much the general public appreciate what they’ve done.

“There’s lots of positive energy, which is great to see and feel, particularly when there are veterans who are struggling.”

To support veterans and remember all those who left Australian shores to build the ANZAC spirit, join the Dawn Service at 5am and Commemorative March at 9am in Sandgate this year.
