Artrageous Arts is welcoming the community to attend its latest exhibition, showcasing the work of artist-in-residence Anne Gadsby and her collection of ceramic and mosaic cross pieces.

The exhibition, By Your Holy Cross You Have Redeemed the World, will be held at the gallery on Loftus Street in Deagon from 10 April to 2 May. An opening event will also take place on the evening of Friday, 10 April.

Anne said that her personal reasons for choosing the cross come from “its past symbolism, religious reasons, its simplicity of shape, but mostly from the memories it invokes”.

Symbolism and Memory: The Inspiration Behind the Collection

“The most powerful association will always be, the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, his sacrifice, his suffering and mostly his innocence,” she said.

She said that crosses appeared in countless forms within churches and sacred spaces, decorating architecture, sculptures and paintings. They can also be found at war memorials and incorporated into personal items such as jewellery, clothing, fabrics, artworks, sculptures and tattoos.

“This is where my crosses fit in,” she said. “Not to represent death, nor to be religious, but to celebrate this powerful symbol. Some may represent suffering, some loss, some respect and many, just for pure enjoyment, but always the remembrance of this most important Christian symbol.

“And what I love most about crosses is that they are everywhere; this symbol of salvation is all around us, believe it or not.”
