My recent holiday to Japan left me captivated by something far beyond the beautiful culture and neon-lit streets – it was the effortless mastery of layering. Walking through Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, I was struck by how beautifully Japanese women and men build outfits with intention. Their layering isn’t just practical; it’s expressive, textural, and endlessly creative.
As we step into Autumn, it feels like the perfect moment to embrace this approach and rediscover the potential within our own wardrobes. Layering is, at its heart, a styling technique that allows you to wear your existing pieces while transitioning stylishly between seasons.
Building the Look: Your Three-Step Transeasonal Guide
Start with your base layer –the foundation that sits closest to the body. Think fitted tops, jeans, simple dresses, or a midi skirt and tee. Tonal colours work beautifully here, creating a balanced canvas for the layers to come.
Next is the middle layer, where the outfit starts to take more shape. Introduce texture, warmth, and dimension: a chunky knit over a silk dress, tights and boots, a soft scarf, sneakers.
