If you’re looking for a fun, unusual interest for the new year, why not give curling a try?

The Olympic sport, famous for sliding stones and fast-paced sweeping, is gaining popularity in Queensland, with the Queensland Curling Association (QCA) in Boondall keen to welcome newcomers onto the ice.

Grace McIntosh-Phillips, President of QCA, said curling is a sport for everyone.

“Anyone curious about trying a quirky, fun Olympic sport is welcome,” Grace said. “Curling caters to all abilities and is suitable for a wide range of ages from 12 upwards.

“It’s a sport you can do with family and friends, where parents can play alongside their kids in a really welcoming environment.”

Come and Try Sessions at Iceworld

Come and Try sessions are designed to give participants a hands-on introduction to the sport, where they will learn the basics, practise sliding stones, and get guidance on sweeping from experienced curlers.

“The night ends with a friendly game where everyone can put what they’ve learned into practice,” Grace said.

A series of sessions will be held at Boondall’s Iceworld Olympic Rink in January and February. Check the Queensland Curling Association’s Facebook page to find upcoming sessions and book a spot. All equipment is provided, and no prior experience is needed. Just bring a sense of adventure and a willingness to have fun on the ice.
