Summer is here, and Sandgate is full of exciting activities to keep the kids entertained. From exploring nature and getting creative to trying new hobbies, there’s something for everyone.

Embrace Native Wildlife at Boondall Wetlands

For families who love the outdoors, Boondall Wetlands offers festive ways to connect with nature.

On 14 December at 10am, kids aged 7–12 can join the Holly Jolly Celebration of Shorebirds. This hands-on activity brings the wetlands’ feathered residents to life through interactive games, crafts and storytelling. Then, on 18 December at 10am, take a Wild Edibles Walk along the Tulla-yugaipa dhagun track to learn about edible native plants. After the walk, participants can enjoy a tasting session of bush foods and learn which native plants can thrive in a Brisbane backyard or balcony. Both events are free, and booking is required.

Learn to Fish with 2 Bent Rods

For a more hands-on holiday adventure, 2 Bent Rods is offering fishing programs for all ages at Shorncliffe and Nudgee Beach.

Co-founder Sam Beckmann said she was passionate about the benefits of fishing.

“Fishing isn’t always about catching fish,” Sam said. “It’s about connections – connection to yourself, to others, to your community, and to nature and the environment. It’s welcoming to everyone, whether you fish for exercise, mental health, relaxation or for fun.”

In addition to the hands-on fishing sessions, kids aged 3-17 can participate in 2 Bent Rods’ fishing competition, the Qld Kids Fishing Classic, Australia’s largest kids-only fishing competition. Teens and adults don’t have to miss out either, as there is a Teens vs Adults Challenge as well.

Get Creative at Sandgate Library

For creative minds, Sandgate Library is hosting Make and Create: Christmas on 23 December from 11am to 12pm. Open to children aged 4–12, this free drop-in session offers festive craft activities perfect for little hands.

Whether you’re exploring our native wildlife, casting a line or enjoying Christmas crafts, you won’t be short of things to do around Sandgate this summer. These school holiday events are a great opportunity for families to have fun and make lasting memories together.
