Sandgate District State High School journalism club students have reflected on a successful year of researching, writing and publishing.
Three members of the club, Abby, Sofia, and Safiya, recently spoke with Bridge FM’s Suzy and Johnny about their journalism journey.
“I love writing, it’s a passion and it wasn’t something that we felt was featured in the school, so that’s why we started the journalism club,” Abby said.
“It’s been amazing to take advantage of new opportunities, get exposure for our writing, and just to know more about journalism.”
The students meet each week, and have one article in the fortnightly school newsletter, and one article each month in the Sandgate Guide.
“Once we have our ideas for articles, we decide which one will be in the Guide, and which one will be in the school newsletter,” Sofia said.
“It’s really great to see our articles in the Sandgate Guide, to see our efforts being published and know people are reading them. It’s been really inspiring for me.”
Safiya added the club had been a great opportunity for her to progress her writing.
“For me, English is my second language, so it’s been great to be able to improve that and have people read my articles,” she said. “I love it.”
Supporting Young Writers and Building Future Journalists
Abby is going into her final year of school in 2026, and coupled with school captain duties, she hopes to encourage younger students to join the journalism club.
“We just have fun with it and do what we love,” she said. “Just have a go and put yourself out there.”
Sandgate Guide journalist, Brooke Jacobson, has worked with the club throughout the year, providing feedback and giving tips on how to write for a news platform.
“Writing for news is very different to the way students would be used to writing English essays for school,” she said.
“I’m not sure if the students know just how proud I am of them, their writing has been amazing, and I look forward to seeing their work each month.
“If any of them wanted a future in journalism, I have no doubt they could do it.”
