Eloise Marinato has seen a lot of changes during her 100 years but what hasn’t changed is her love for staying active.
Born in June 1925 at the Royal Women’s Hospital Brisbane, Eloise spent her early years in the Samford area before moving to the 4017.
Eloise was ahead of her time, and enjoyed several careers, including managing the private dining rooms at Australia Post. She was also a perfume saleswoman, hydrotherapist, and plant seller, and kept working even after her marriage.
Eloise said she met her husband Michael during World War II and the happy couple enjoyed years of adventures, including being in Russia during the launch of Sputnik.
“I travelled until I was in my 80’s and I attribute my long life partly to my love of seeing the world and meeting new people,” she said.
Michael passed away in 1994, but Eloise has continued to maintain her independent spirit. She said one of the biggest changes she had seen in her life was transport.
“Going from horse and sulky to seeing planes and cruise ships,” Eloise said. “And watching Beams Road go from a dirt track to the concrete monster it is now.”
Eloise’s Secrets to a Long and Active Life
When asked her secret to a long life, Eloise had a few tips.
“Stay away from politics, have a stable home, stay active with people, have a spoonful of Nestle malt extract every single day, and keep your licence,” she said.
The avid gardener also had some advice for today’s young people.
“For god’s sake put down those bloody phones, talk to each other and grow a plant,” Eloise said.
