A Fond Farewell and a New Chapter for Jim’s Washing Machine Repairs in Brighton

After more than four decades fixing appliances for locals in and around Brighton, much-loved repairman Jim Mergler is officially hanging up his tools – well, sort of.

At 82, Jim is retiring from the home-based workshop he has run from Craig Street since the 1980s, marking the end of an era for many in the community.

Jim’s connection to the area runs deep. He grew up just up the road in Baskerville Street and attended Brighton Primary School. After a stint in New Zealand – where he married and had three daughters – he returned to Brighton in 1980 to raise his girls and build his business.

Specialising in repairing and selling washing machines, fridges and dryers, Jim earned a reputation for honesty, reliability and old-fashioned, friendly service.

“I’ve had up to three generations from the same family come to me for help fixing or buying a washing machine – it happens quite a lot!” Jim said with a smile. “It’s a great feeling to know people keep coming back and trust me to help.”

A Legacy of Service Continues in Brighton

Over the years, Jim has passed on his knowledge and values to the team around him. One of his trusted staff members, who has worked closely with him for some time, will now continue the business from the same Craig Street location – offering the same quality service that locals have come to know and trust.

“I feel lucky to have worked with someone who understands what this business means to the community,” Jim said. “They’ll keep looking after people – that’s the most important thing.”

Though Jim is ready to hitch up the caravan and head off to explore Queensland and beyond, he admits he won’t be disappearing completely.

“I’m not sure I know how to properly retire,” he laughed. “I reckon I’ll still be tinkering here and there. It’s hard to give up something you love.”

For Brighton and the surrounding suburbs, Jim is more than a repairman – he’s part of the neighbourhood’s fabric. And as this new chapter begins, his legacy of service, care and community spirit will continue – one repaired washing machine at a time.
