Writing for the stage

Sandgate Theatre Inc is calling on budding writers to attend a three-day workshop which will hopefully inspire a brand-new production.

The Writer’s Workshop is being held on July 18, 19 and 20, and according to local theatre actor Ryan Barnes, it’s going to be a great hands-on experience.

“We’d like to see as many people attend as possible, all our local talent – writers, directors, and performers,” he said.

“During the first two days, we will be collaborating to create scenes of an original play, which we will rehearse on the Saturday afternoon, and then on the Sunday, we will perform the scenes and ask the audience if they’d like to see the rest of the play written.”

It’s the first time Sandgate Theatre Inc has hosted a Writer’s Workshop, and it’s free for all participants.

The Art of Stage Writing and Workshop Details

Ryan added writing for the stage was an art form.

“The closest comparison is probably screenwriting, but with the stage, you’re quite limited by the physical space,” he said.

“That’s the biggest challenge, using the space well.”

Ryan said writing that sparkled was all about relationships.

“There’s a great saying that all acting is reacting, and for a great performance and great writing, it’s about nailing those relationships between people and making it seem natural,” he said.

“There’s so much local talent here in Sandgate – I know so many people who are passionate about writing, acting, performing, and we want to see those people come to our workshop.

“Our aim at Sandgate Theatre Inc is really to help everyone passionate about theatre to grow and shine in that industry and in that space.

“This workshop should be a real blast, and I just want to encourage as many people as possible to come along.”
