Koobara Kindy is getting ready to welcome the community with open arms at their annual Family Fun Day.

Being held on Thursday, 10 July, the fun day will feature live entertainment, delicious food options, stall holders and giveaways, as well as cultural dance and song demonstrations.

Joseph Armstrong, Director Operations, Leadership and Engagement for the kindy said the fun day was a way to showcase First Nations culture, as well as celebrate the work of staff and families.

“We have 44 children a week here over a five-day program, and we have been running for 50 years,” he said.

“Our main goal is to offer a high-quality early learning program with a focus on cultural inclusivity, especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.

“We do have other culturally and linguistically diverse families here – we’re basically an open door for anyone.”

Joe added it was important for children to have a sense of cultural identity, and to know they’re part of a community.

“We’re a safe place for families,” he said.

Koobara Kindy’s Legacy and Family Fun Day Details

Koobara Kindy started in 1974 when a group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers found their children were not being accepted into mainstream kindergarten programs, while the children of non-Indigenous families were.

“Those mums felt the early learning needs of their children were not being met, so they came together to form the kindergarten, and have that early learning there with a cultural background,” Joe said.

“And because of the work of our founders, we are now able to continue to give that early learning experience to the children of our community.

“We’re all about the children here – those early learning years are so important, and they help to form our future leaders.”

The theme for the event is The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy.

The Koobara Kindy staff and families invite the community to celebrate culture, connection and First Nations heritage, while enjoying a day with fun for all ages.
