For the July Journalist Club contribution, we wanted to write about the role of Reconciliation Week in Australia.
Reconciliation Week marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum, which changed the Australian constitution to allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be counted in the population, and the 1992 Mabo High Court Decision, which recognised the existence of native title.
The week runs from 27 May to 3 June, and it is a week to reflect on shared cultures, histories, stories, and achievements of Australians.
The Ongoing Journey of Reconciliation
Reconciliation Week also allows us to think about how we can contribute to reconciliation. Participating involves acknowledging the inequality of the past, addressing current issues, and moving forward to a better and just future.
Reconciliation Week commemorates the important process of building strong connections between all Australians.
Even though Reconciliation Week is only for a short amount of time, reconciliation is an ongoing journey that we all walk together.
