The curtain is rising on a brand-new showcase of local creativity with the debut of Sandgate’s Got Talent this month.

Hosted by Sandgate Theatre Inc, the performance showcase will take place on 29 August (primary and secondary school performers) and 30 August (open category performers) at Sandgate Town Hall.

According to Sandgate Theatre Inc secretary and actor Ryan Barnes, Sandgate’s Got Talent would be a celebration of the performing talents of the wider community.

“This is the first year that we’ve held this event, and we hope to make it an annual celebration that people will know our area and our company for,” Ryan said.

Auditions are organised for 2 August, and Ryan said the theatre company hoped to see as many varied talents as possible, to best encapsulate the diversity of the community.

“Anything from singers and musicians to dramatic performances to stand-up, mime, even speed artistry and everything in between,” he said. “Nothing is too little or niche for our event.”

Supporting Local Talent and Rejuvenating the Arts Scene

At the showcase, performers will have the chance to impress a panel of judges led by Sandgate Theatre Inc President Catherine Radbourne, alongside two surprise guests. Prizes include monetary awards for the performers, and lucky door prizes and raffles for the audience.

Ryan said they had already received a lot of support from local talent, as well as local members, including Bisma Asif MP and Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy.

“Our team has been hard at work behind the scenes: organising guest judges, collecting prizes, orchestrating the marketing campaign and reaching out to our local performing networks,” he said. “Events like this are only possible because of the time and effort put in by our committee, and we’re all very excited for the event.

“Sandgate Theatre Inc is currently in the process of rebranding and rejuvenating in a push to better support the arts locally – and we think that it’s essential that the community does their part in fostering both existing and upcoming performers.

“The arts are quintessentially human and speak to everyone in different ways, and we believe that life is enriched through them. That’s why we are so motivated to find these talented people and groups and to give them their chance to shine in front of audiences.”

Admission is available on the night for a gold coin donation.
