A new resident has landed in Sandgate! A custom metal ibis sculpture, affectionately known as a Binny, is now perched proudly at a home on Eagle Terrace.
The artwork is part of the growing Bin Chicken Trail by Brisbane-based Sethius Art and marks the very first installation in Sandgate.
Homeowners Deborah and Joe said they were inspired to join the trail after publishing a children’s story for the Sandgate Historical Society, starring none other than a bin chicken.
“The ibis is Sandgate, the name is everywhere and (the) image is everywhere, so why shouldn’t he be on our little tourist road?” Deb said. “Early last century, the locals adopted the ibis to stand for ‘I Believe in Sandgate’ – no truer statement even today for locals like (us).
“With a wedding anniversary milestone arriving, we thought, what a fun way to commemorate it.
“Our Binny has been named Bayview Binnie. He is holding binoculars and dressed with a hat for a sunny day by the bay. Illustrations of his hat reflect us, little pictorial elements of who we are.
“Bayview Binnie is looking out towards the bay, showing tourists where the view is.
“We hope our little guy perched high on our viewing deck near the corner of Eagle and Curlew will catch their eye.”
Art with Personality and a Touch of Fun
The trail’s creator, Ryan from Sethius Art, said that when a customer buys a Binny, he works with them to decide what the bin chicken should hold.
“I’ve made Binnies holding beers, sporting goods, fishing rods, cameras and even one designed to hold a ring box for a proposal,” he said.
“Deb and Joe had very specific requests about their Binny, with him intended as a reflection of their interests and personalities. Even the colours will be themed to subtly match their house.”
He said there were almost 200 Binnies now, across three sizes.
“On the official trail, there are now around 40 Binnies on public display around Brisbane,” he said. “The exact number is hard to pin down as they do have a tendency to fly away and disappear!
“This Binny is the first in Sandgate, but will not be the last. The trail is spreading and growing all the time, and in my opinion, the more the merrier. It’s a bit of fun after all!”
