Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy has had a record amount of community feedback in the lead up to his annual Budget submission to Brisbane City Council.
Cr Cassidy said he received hundreds of responses to a seven-suburb wide survey, with residents raising issues including drainage and flooding, ageing infrastructure, and community facilities upgrades.
“Much of what I have included in this year’s budget will be familiar to the Lord Mayor, as so many of the local projects and big issues facing Brisbane go unanswered,” Cr Cassidy said.
“With an overwhelming response from my community survey, it’s clearer than ever, our community aren’t feeling they get value for money from Council.”
Key Priorities and Community Concerns
One of the key priorities for the 4017 community is drainage, with calls for action to address local flooding, particularly since the devastating 2022 floods.
Cr Cassidy said upgrades in Brighton and surrounding areas were highlighted as critical in his Budget submission.
“I share the same frustration as residents, year after year, it feels as if highly requested local projects are pushed down the priority list,” he said.
Local infrastructure also featured heavily in feedback from residents, with many pointing out footpath issues, road upgrades and pedestrian safety improvements.
One submission from a local resident said: “Every major road in the ward needs fixing, there is cracking & grass growing down the middle of roads, potholes and other surface damage that are safety incidents waiting to happen.”
Another said: “More footpaths (funded) around 4017 for accessibility and safety for young kids riding bikes and scooters especially in an area with a lot of local primary schools trying to encourage kids to ride and walk to school.”
In the Bracken Ridge Ward, Cr Sandy Landers said she would be advocating for a focus on suburban investment.
“I’m continuing to push for ongoing investment in smoother local roads, footpath upgrades, and maintenance projects to improve safety and connectivity across the northside,” Cr Landers said.
“I know many residents value local library programs, active and health activities, and affordable initiatives like $2 Summer Dips, and I’ll continue advocating strongly for these types of community services.
“As we head toward the next Budget, my focus remains on working with Lord Mayor Adrien Schrinner to deliver practical improvements that ensure our community continues to be the best place in Brisbane to live.”
Deagon Ward residents also want to see upgrades at Einbunpin Lagoon, an issue which has been a talking point in Sandgate for the past few years.
“It’s time, as we experience population growth, increased development and the Olympic Games, that we see a serious commitment from Council to our community,” Cr Cassidy said.
The Brisbane City Council Budget for 2026- 2027 will be tabled this month.
