Tickets will go on sale this month for the inaugural Sandgate Comedy Festival, an adults-only night of laughs.
The event will be held at Sandgate Town Hall on Saturday, 22 August, organised by local not-for-profit Four57, with Dave O’Neil headlining alongside three local acts.
According to Four57 president Chris Ferguson, the idea for a comedy festival had been in discussion for years.
“We really believe the people of 4017 would embrace a night of quality comedy,” Chris said.
“We reached out to Dave O’Neil, who lives in Melbourne, a few years back, and he genuinely loved what we do. The others are local comedians at varying stages of their careers that we have connections with.
“Bringing the community together is what we love to do. Even better when the community is laughing together.”
Lineup, Purpose and Event Details
Four57 runs backyard blitzes and clean-ups for people in need, and funds raised from the festival will go toward equipment and fuel to support these efforts.
Dave, recognisable from appearances on Fisk, Utopia, and Spicks and Specks, said the event would be “a fun night in Sandgate”.
“I know that part of Brisbane, cause my brother lived there for a long time, and I really like the area,” he said. “Also, I want to encourage people to put on comedy events, so hopefully it will inspire other organisations to put on similar events.”
He said his set would include talking to the crowd to see “what’s going on in Sandgate”.
“I am a middle-aged man, so I will be talking about the joy and trials of having teenage children, things that annoy me like electric scooters, and I recently got a Seniors Card, which has been a wealth of jokes,” he said.
“It’s good that my skills can be used to raise money for good causes. I certainly can’t build a playground or give out medicine, but I can make people laugh, so that’s something.”
Joining him on stage will be social media star Charlotte Grimmer, who has toured her one-woman musical comedy show nationally, Australian comedian Desh, who “finds better things to do with his life but always returns to the sound of people laughing at his silly jokes and tall stories,” and local performer Jay Walt.
Jay, who has performed in West End, Fortitude Valley and the Gold Coast, said he was looking forward to performing locally for the first time. He noted that many of his adults-only gags were inspired by observations from his childhood in Adelaide.
“My brand is pretty raw – confronting but real,” he said. “I just enjoy comedy; I love performing.
“It’s about telling a story, making people laugh, putting a smile on their face, and they go home in a good mood.”
Seating for the event is limited. Tickets, priced at $40, will be available from 3 June here.
