Looking for ways to make the most of winter in Sandgate without spending a cent? With mild weather, sweeping bay views and a relaxed village feel, there’s plenty to enjoy close to home.
Go for a Walk
You can easily spend half a day enjoying the foreshore. Winter is a great time to explore – cooler, crisp and comfortable without the summer humidity. The Sandgate to Shorncliffe coastal path is one of Brisbane’s most scenic walks. Follow Flinders Parade along the waterfront, past elegant Victorian homes and out to the iconic Shorncliffe Pier. The pier is also a popular fishing spot if you enjoy dropping a line.
For those keen to go further, continue to Brighton for a longer bayside walk.
Go Wildlife Spotting
Just inland from the main shopping strip, Dowse Lagoon and Einbunpin Lagoon are worth a visit. The walking paths are peaceful and the birdlife is abundant year-round. Keep an eye out for turtles basking in the sun, and take your time, because even locals who visit regularly still spot new species. It’s a quiet pocket of nature that’s easy to miss, but well worth the detour.
Enjoy the Playgrounds
For families, Arthur Davis Park on Flinders Parade is a great stop to burn off energy. It’s a relaxed space for kids to play while adults enjoy the fresh winter air and bay views.
Brisbane City Council’s low and no-cost Active and Healthy events often take place here too, including Zumba and Pilates. For more information, visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/parks-and-recreation/sports-and-leisure/active-and-healthy-activities
Visit the Library
Sandgate Library is another welcoming space with plenty of activities to enjoy on a winter’s day. Browse for some new reads, pick up some DVDs or enjoy one of the upcoming library events, with activities for babies through to seniors. Note: The library is closed on Mondays and Sundays.
Enjoy the Town Centre
For a touch of culture, Et Al Gallery and Studio on Fifth Avenue offers rotating exhibitions throughout the year and is always worth a wander. It’s open most Mondays (see Instagram for updates) and 10am-4pm Thursday to Sunday.
And don’t overlook Sandgate’s historic town centre. With its ornamental ponds, leafy parkland, grand old post office and mix of vintage and modern shops, it’s a lovely place for a mindful stroll and a bit of seaside charm.
Winter in Sandgate is simple, peaceful and best enjoyed at your own pace. Wander, pause and explore, and enjoy everything our bayside village offers for free.
