Bend, Stretch, and Take a Breath

Yoga is a fitness class that’s often marketed solely towards women. But local instructor Steve Williams is aiming to change that perception, offering men-only classes in Sandgate.

He said yoga had the same benefits for men as it does for women.

“I think there’s an expectation that a yoga class is going to be filled with bendy people looking fantastic in leggings,” he said.

“And men seem to be worried, or afraid about attending mixed gender yoga classes. Yoga can help with so much, from simply getting up and down off the floor, to helping you sleep better, and improving mental health.”

Steve added that yoga was a holistic practice, not just stretching, and it was designed to help people “calm their nervous system”.

“It’s also about breath work, learning to be still,” he said. “And for men, that can be so helpful in their relationships – it can help men be less reactive.

“I’ve taught at leadership retreats, international conferences, and I’ve taught tradies as well. Ultimately, we’re all having the same experiences; our bodies are sore, our minds are tired, we get fractious.

“Breathing is really key to being able to move more freely, it affects our mental and physical health, it can stop snoring and improve sexual function.”

Building Community Through Men’s Yoga

While the monthly class is designed specifically for men in their 50s and 60s – and those in their 40s who feel like they’re 60 – the class is open to any men in the community. And there’s no experience necessary.

The classes offer a relaxed, supportive environment, where men can “learn at their own pace alongside other blokes”.

“It’s also about building community,” Steve said.

“And that’s why for these classes there’s an open invitation to have a coffee and a chat afterwards. As we age and maybe stop playing sport, or our kids get older and don’t play sport anymore, men lose community, they lose that connection, especially with lots of people working from home now.”

Classes are $25 each or $20 for concession. Find more information here. Book your places here.
