Bald Hills State School is celebrating 160 years of education, memories and community – and everyone is invited!

Maddie De Young, Vice President (Events & Fundraising) of the Bald Hills State School P&C Association, said the team had been working hard to bring the milestone celebration together.

“The main festival will be on the 10th of October,” she said. “It will bring together current students and families, past students and staff, the wider Bald Hills community, and anyone who has a connection with the school.”

To mark the occasion, Maddie said they had been collecting old photographs, stories and memories to create a snapshot of the school’s history and the changes over the past 160 years.

Former student and teacher Mrs Dale Slattery attended the school from 1954 to 1961, and was part of the last cohort to complete Year 8 as primary school students. She recalled how different school life was at that time.

“A couple of us students were picked to run along the verandah and answer the phone in the office when it rang,” she said. “There were no school secretaries in those days.”

Longtime teacher Mrs Alison Durand also shared memories and reflected on the important role the Bald Hills’ Forestry played in school life over the years.

“We regularly took students there for Science, Art and English lessons,” she said. “With the help of Mrs Brennan, our green-thumbed teacher aide, we planted eucalyptus trees down the back hoping that koalas would stop there while travelling.”

The Forestry remains a special part of Bald Hills’ identity, and the anniversary celebrations will help ensure it continues to be part of school life for generations to come. Funds raised will go towards revitalising the space, creating an area where students can once again learn, explore and enjoy.

Celebrating 160 Years of Bald Hills State School

“It is much more than a patch of trees,” Maddie said. “With its historic hoop pines planted by students in 1937, the trees have grown alongside our students, connecting the Bald Hills families of the past with those of today.”

The anniversary festival will feature amusement rides, tasty food, market stalls, live student performances, historical displays, a beer garden, and a silent auction.

“The celebrations will finish with a fireworks finale at approximately 6.45pm,” Maddie said. “We want to celebrate everyone who has been part of Bald Hills State School’s story over the past 160 years.”
