A small plaque presented in Deagon last month represented something much bigger: 14 years of a local business and a community group looking out for one another.
On Monday, 7 September, representatives from the Sandgate Men’s Shed, Pete, Chris and Peter, visited Deagon Bulk Meats to present owners Samantha and Courtney Walk with a plaque handmade at the shed, thanking the business for its longstanding support.
For the past 14 years, Deagon Bulk Meats has supplied ham each week for Men’s Shed members to enjoy together over lunch.
“I wanted to find a small way we could support men’s mental health, and the Men’s Shed does such an important job of giving men somewhere to connect,” Samantha said.
The relationship is one of many ways Deagon Bulk Meats supports the local community, including supplying meat for barbecues at events such as Backyard Bonanza and the Einbunpin Festival.
A Local Business with a Long Community History
Sandgate Men’s Shed liaison Peter Harrison said the weekly contribution was about more than simply providing lunch.
“Having the support of local businesses like Deagon Bulk Meats means a great deal to our members,” Peter said. “It shows that the wider community values what the Men’s Shed provides for local men.”
That strong community connection seems fitting for a butcher shop with more than a century of local history.
The site can be traced back to the early 1920s, when Barclay Street was Deagon’s main shopping strip, and it has always operated as a butchery. Part of the original premises was even home to a blacksmith making horseshoes.
Samantha’s family purchased the business in 2008 and later uncovered treasures hidden beneath eight layers of plasterboard, including hand-painted windows and the original butcher’s block, which is now on display.
Samantha also remembers a customer, Mrs Patterson, who said she shopped there with her father during World War II.
More than a century after opening its doors, Deagon Bulk Meats continues to play a part in the community it has long called home.
