Sandgate is set for a night of Indonesian food, music and culture, with every ticket sold to help children in need.

The inaugural Gado Gado Gala on Friday, 16 October, an evening of Indonesian cuisine, cultural performances and entertainment, will raise funds to support the launch of the Subu Collective, an initiative providing education and resources for orphaned and vulnerable children in Kupang, Indonesia.

Subu Collective Team Member Cat Wing Kee said they were “using the power of a shared meal to fund education for vulnerable children.”

“It’s about supporting children who aren’t always parentless, but are ‘economic orphans’, surrendered into care simply because the barrier to basic survival and education is too high for their families to carry alone,” Cat said.

The initiative was created by former restaurateur of Mamaku Street Food, Mie Mie Wing Kee, from Indonesia, to bring people, food and culture together and raise funds to support children in Kupang. Many families there struggle to afford basic school supplies, such as books and uniforms, or even transport to school, which can contribute to high dropout rates. Every ticket purchased for the gala will help fund education opportunities.

Bringing Indonesian Culture and Community Together

In various Indonesian languages, Subu means ‘the first light’, and Cat said the “Subu Collective is a possibility to begin breaking the generational cycle of poverty and hardship.”

“You’re not just buying a night out, you’re buying a child’s first light,” Cat said. “Subu Collective is about recognising that global problems need a global community. Creating events, such as the Gado Gado Gala, is an opportunity to help make a difference and for people to come together to collectively contribute to what is wanted, needed and missing in the world.

“Subu Collective invites partnerships and collaborations with like-minded individuals, initiatives and projects to expand what is possible for the orphans of Kupang.”

Guests at the gala will enjoy a full Indonesian buffet, mini market stalls, a live band, cultural performances and a silent auction.

Those wishing to donate a prize for the silent auction or contribute to the Gado Gado Gala, can reach out via email at Subucollective@gmail.com.
