Now that spring is in full swing and the warmer temperatures have arrived, Sandgate Qigong has returned to the foreshore, offering a gentle way to start the day with beautiful views and fresh seaside air.

Instructor Deborah Lilly said qigong (pronounced ‘chee-gung’) is an ancient Chinese mind-body practice combining slow movement, controlled breathwork, and meditation.

“Sharing it with others is fun and keeps me motivated to learn more,” she said. “Regular practice means we get to know each other and enjoy each other’s quirkiness.”

Motivated by wanting to stay strong and healthy for her two young granddaughters, Deborah loves how the practice generates an overall feeling of wellbeing.

“I can lift my granddaughters and play with them all day,” she said. “My mind is sharper, my focus clearer, and balance stronger. Releasing, relaxing and loosening makes qigong different from most exercise forms and there is no stress on the lungs.”

Moving Outdoors to the Sandgate Foreshore

Having recently moved from their winter venue at Womenspace, Deborah said that classes are now held outdoors by Arthur Davis Park, where the natural surroundings have become part of the experience.

“We are blessed to have the beautiful bay to gaze at, breathing air fresh off the water, and surrounded by generous shade trees,” she said. “Everybody is welcome to join us.”
