The students at Holy Spirit College Fitzgibbon have hit the airwaves with their very own podcast.

After a full-day training session with LIVE FM, the students then spent two days recording 12 episodes, interviewing local leaders, as well as other students, teachers, and the college principal.

One of the students, Ely in Year 10, said she had previously been a fan of true crime podcasts before joining this project. She added the process of interviewing the guests had been interesting.

“We do some research on the guest and then come up with questions we like to ask, but we don’t always use them – sometimes depending on what they say, we have to ask different questions,” she said.

“So, you have to listen and think about what they’re saying at the same time.”

Guests have included Bracken Ridge Ward Councillor Sandy Landers, State MP for Sandgate Bisma Asif, and local performer and songwriter Emma Dean.

“It’s been great to see how other people have pursued their passions, and for us to be able to learn from that,” Ben, in Year 11, said. “It’s influenced how I feel about podcasts, and even TV interviews; I didn’t really know how much work went into it, and how structured it is.”

Lilly, also in Year 11, added the project had opened a new perspective on the media.

“I’ve never even listened to a podcast before, but now I definitely will be,” she said.

“Just knowing all the effort that goes into making a show, it’s amazing.

“When I saw all the equipment, I just thought wow, this is like radio, it’s not just two people sitting in a room with a microphone.”

Learning New Skills Through Podcasting

Teacher Melissa Cutter said the students had been given the go-ahead to continue with the podcast for another term.

“The feedback we’ve got from guests is that the students are confident, and of course, they’re learning new skills,” she said.

“The equipment is going to be able to be used right across the curriculum, and once the podcast is released, it will be available on any platform where people normally get their podcasts.”

And as for their dream podcast guest? For Year 7 student Charlotte, there was only one answer.

“Guy Sebastian,” she said.

So, if anyone in the 4017 is mates with Guy, please get in touch with Holy Spirit College – the students are keen to feature the pop superstar on an upcoming episode.
