Sandgate’s most popular divas are gearing up to delight audiences with another mid-year performance as they celebrate all things Irish.
The Bayside Divas will showcase an eclectic mix of Irish songs when they bring their Celtic Connections concert to Sandgate Town Hall in early June.
Sandra Milliken, musical director for the group, said that while the group presented a similar theme ten years ago, this year’s show will follow on from that success.
“Back in 2015, the choir presented a highly acclaimed program under the title Celts and Kilts, featuring both Irish and Scottish songs,” she said. “But this time, the repertoire has been drawn exclusively from the Emerald Isle.
“Celtic Connections will bring our audiences a fabulous mix of songs, ranging from traditional folk songs, through evergreen favourites, right up to popular hit songs of today made famous by Irish singers and bands, including Nothing Compares To You by Sinead O’Connor and With Or Without You by U2.”
A Choir with Heart and Harmony
Christine Reed, Concert Coordinator for the Bayside Divas said that although the whole choir is involved in the selection of songs for each concert, they rely heavily on Sandra for the inspiration for the theme each year.
“Sandra has been with the choir for 18 years,” Christine said. “She ensures each concert brings something new for our audience, as well as new content for the Divas to enjoy learning together.”
With more than half of the choir having been with the group for over 10 years now, Christine said that many long-standing friendships had been formed.
“I’ve been with the choir for 13 years and love the feeling of being connected to the group,” she said. “I love the joy of singing with others and Sandra always provides a great selection of songs to keep it interesting and fun.
“Having said that, we always welcome new members. It’s a non-auditioned choir, you just have to be able to sing in tune.”
As the group just celebrated their 20th-anniversary last year, they have seen their following grow over the last two decades and are very grateful for those who come out to enjoy their music.
“Our mid-year concert has grown and evolved over the years,” Christine said. “We’re very appreciative that we have the audience numbers to support two performances.”
Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $11 for children under 12 (under 5’s free). Tickets are available at the door unless sold out prior.
