Two up-and-coming playwrights are debuting their original production at the Sandgate Town Hall, and if you love a good laugh, this one’s for you.
Beans Means Love is an absurdist comedy co-written and co-directed by Kailan Tyler-Moss and Alannah Costello.
Kailan said the storyline was “certainly something different”.
“It’s about two people who fall in love over a can of beans, and the can of beans then becomes personified, and chaos follows,” she said.
“We originally wrote it about three years ago, and the prompt we were given at the time was love, death and beans.
“Alannah just said, ‘Beans means Heinz … beans means love’ and oh my gosh, that was it!”
The duo has appeared in other Sandgate Theatre productions, but Beans Means Love is their first full-length production as writers and directors.
A Wild First Production at Sandgate Town Hall
“The play is narrated by Common Sense and there are other characters, including Crystal, who just loves crystals and everything to do with them and Greg, who is the only one who can see the ridiculousness of everything,” Alannah said.
She added Sandgate Theatre Inc had been “very supportive”.
“When it comes to community theatre and getting the word out, it’s a grapevine effect,” Alannah said.
“And you know, when people come along to shows, they’re always saying, ‘This was so good, I’m so glad I came’. Particularly for a show like this, where the storyline is just wild.”
Both Alannah and Kailan are studying drama at university and hope to make their careers in theatre.
“Theatre is about providing an escape for people, to entertain and also to be able to comment on political issues and social justice,” Kailan said.
Alannah added: “It’s a whole new world, and I just love being able to meet different people, and be open to opportunities and to entertain people as well.”
Beans Means Love is playing five shows at the Sandgate Town Hall. Tickets are available now and prices start from $12.50. Doors open 30 minutes before show time.
