Local community organisation, Womenspace, is launching The Art Collective – a new creative project that welcomes women of any age and background to participate.
Launching in May, The Art Collective will allow women to participate in various art workshops hosted by artists and members of Womenspace.
Womenspace Chairman Ludmila Doneman said The Art Collective project aims to bring connection and creativity through art workshops and exhibitions.
“The artists in the Collective all firmly believe in the benefits of connection and creativity to wellbeing through art workshops and art exhibitions, understanding that even looking at art can be beneficial to one’s wellbeing,” Ludmila said.
“They will promote and foster these benefits by offering an initial introductory round of workshops between May and August in hopes that these will then continue on a regular basis.
“The artists will have an ever-changing exhibition of their works on the walls for all to enjoy and to purchase, with commissions going to help further the work (Womenspace) does in the community.”
Why The Art Collective Matters for Women in the Community
Womenspace was founded in 1997 with the focus of creating a safe space for women to connect, create and thrive.
After the successful participation in the Sandgate Creative Trail in October last year, Womenspace saw the benefits that art had on the community.
“Our experience in the Creative Trail was very positive and served as a promotion of the space and organisation,” Ludmila said.
“It sparked the idea of creating a WS Gallery and 2025 art workshops, led by the participating artists – (which was the) birth of The Art Collective.
“The recent April evening event ‘Celebrate Being Wildly Creative’ with The Art Collective at Womenspace was a great indication to what will happen during these workshops.”
When asked why a project like this is so important for the community, Ludmila said, “Womenspace’s activities and its space provide a safe and supportive haven for women in the local community.
“Especially at times in their lives where many women may feel isolated, the activities offered give opportunity to express themselves creatively, learn something new, make connections and build friendships.”
