Take yourself back to a time when Elvis shook, The Rolling Stones jumped about and The Beatles reigned supreme.

The next Rock Under The Clock is all about paying tribute to the Legends of Rock and the iconic music from the 50s and 60s. Jim Hansen and The Sonics, along with special guest artist Nicky Steel, are set to shake the foundations of the Sandgate Town Hall on 31 May.

Rock Under The Clock planning and organising team chairman Rod Kippen said the event had become an institution on the Sandgate entertainment calendar.

“We know that people look forward to it because it revolves around 60s music, it’s live music and it’s something that’s a rare commodity when it comes to entertainment these days,” he said. “Each dance we host is always at capacity and everyone has the best time.”

Paying Homage to Icons of Rock and Roll

It’s an event steeped in history due to its location and the band The Sonics.

“Historically, it’s mostly been held at the Sandgate Town Hall, hence the title of the event, Rock Under The Clock,” Rod said. “In the late 50s, rock and roll was just getting going. The first rock and roll hit to top the charts was Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley & His Comets, so we pay homage to that song with our title.

“Also, back in the 60s, The Sonics used to play at the town hall for school dances and other events. Fast forward to the centenary celebrations of the hall and there was a ball where The Sonics were asked to play. After the success of the event, The Sonics were encouraged to continue playing and have become involved in planning and organising Rock Under The Clock events from then on.”

Rock Under The Clock, which kicked off in 2014, is held biannually and is also a not-for-profit event, raising funds (almost $100,000 since the beginning) for charitable organisations, with the current beneficiary the Queensland Blue Light Association.

“They are very active in the community, running programs for at-risk youth identified through the justice system,” Rod said. “In addition to that, they run prevention programs at high schools.
“It’s part of the Queensland Police Service and so our events are usually volunteered by police recruits from the academy. They help serve suppers and towards the end of the night, they actually get up, dance and do the Nutbush. It makes for a really fun night all round.”
