A new gem and mineral event will bring together local clubs, makers and families when Imagem and Brighton Handmade Collective hosts its inaugural Gem and Mineral Show this month.

The event will be held in the garden section of the store on Saturday, 11 July, featuring demonstrations, children’s activities and handmade jewellery displays.

Imagem and Brighton Handmade Collective owner Sara Boase said the exhibition had been years in the making.

“I have been thinking about it for a year or two but the right time hadn’t presented itself,” she said.

“This year, there was a gap in the calendar between other local gem shows, so I decided to go for it. I invited local clubs and they were keen to join in the fun.”

Local Gem Clubs and Makers Take Centre Stage

Among those taking part is the Redcliffe Gem Club, a volunteer-run group where members learn gemstone cutting and polishing, faceting, silversmithing, and jewellery making.

The club’s assistant secretary, Julie, said access to specialised equipment, workshops and experienced mentors was a benefit for members, “making these fascinating hobbies far more affordable than setting up your own workshop at home”.

“Whether you’re a complete beginner or already have an interest in rocks, gems and jewellery, we’d love to help you get started,” Julie said.

At the club’s stall, visitors will be able to view members’ work, browse gemstone slabs for sale and take part in a lucky dip. Trudy from Dugong Design will also exhibit handcrafted jewellery, while club member Eloise will be available to answer questions about club activities.

The Caboolture Gem Club will also be attending. Club vice president Donna Parker said the event would help promote local gem clubs.

“We will be taking our gem sieving equipment for kids to do gem sieving,” she said.

“Also, we will be doing silversmithing and faceting demos and have a mineral display showcasing Mother Nature’s beauty.”

Sara said it was important to support local gem clubs and local handmade jewellery makers.

“Local gem clubs are generally volunteer-run so supporting them in any way is of benefit,” she said.

“They teach people young and old about gems and minerals that come from our earth. Handmade jewellery is unique and comes from the soul of the artist; each piece means something and I prefer it to overseas imports.

“Please support local handmade.”
