With its much-loved music and heartwarming themes, it’s easy to see why Bracken Ridge State High School (BRSHS) has chosen to bring crowd-favourite Mary Poppins JR. to its stage.
Jordan Bull, BRSHS drama teacher and musical co-director, said that the production was chosen both for the story itself and for the opportunity it offered students across all year levels to be involved when the show hits the stage in late July.
“Mary Poppins JR. offers a wonderful range of opportunities for students to showcase their acting, singing and dancing skills,” he said. “We have more than 45 students performing from Years 7 to 12.”
Beyond those performing on stage, students have been busy behind the scenes creating props, assisting backstage, and even menu planning.
“Hospitality students have been designing menu items for our ‘Spoonful Of Sugar’ dessert stall and preparing meals for students and staff during rehearsal weekends,” Jordan said.
“Productions like this encourage teamwork, creativity, and leadership, while helping students build friendships across year levels and working towards a shared goal.”
More Than a Musical: Building Skills and Confidence
Despite all of the hard work and weekend rehearsals, Jordan said the benefits of being involved in this type of production extended well beyond the classroom.
“Creative and performing arts are more important than ever in a world increasingly shaped by technology and artificial intelligence,” he said. “For many students, the arts provide a sense of belonging, lifelong friendships and opportunities to discover passions.”
Zac, a Year 10 student who plays Bert, said that he has really enjoyed being part of such a wonderful production.
“My favourite part has been working with such a great cast and being able to be myself around everyone,” he said. “I’m most looking forward to hearing the audience’s reactions and really letting loose on stage.”
For Jordan, seeing the students put in months-long dedication has been incredibly rewarding.
“It is always exciting to see students learning from one another, forming new friendships and developing a genuine passion for the performing arts,” he said. “Seeing the hard work come together into a production that the whole school community can be proud of is something very special.”
