Bringing the Night Sky Closer at Urban Observers

You don’t need to travel far from the city to experience the wonder of the night sky.

Urban Observers is built on the belief that astronomy can be enjoyed close to home, through a free monthly community skywatching event hosted by the South East Queensland Astronomical Society (SEQAS) at Barrett Street Park in Bracken Ridge.

Held on a Saturday evening, the gatherings are relaxed, informal nights under the stars. Weather permitting, visitors can explore the sky through telescopes provided by SEQAS members.

SEQAS Honorary Member and Urban Observers founder Julie Straayer said the aim was to make astronomy accessible for everyone.

“Urban Observers gives people a friendly place to ask questions, receive guidance, and experience astronomy first-hand,” Julie said.

“Public outreach has always held a special place in my heart. Astronomy can be a very singular hobby, and I really enjoy sharing my passion with others.”

Julie said the suburban setting was part of what made the program so accessible.

“Even with light pollution, there is still plenty to enjoy from an urban location, especially the moon, bright planets, double stars and star clusters,” she said.

“Urban sky watching is special because it brings astronomy to where people already are. It removes many of the barriers that can stop people from getting involved and shows that you do not need to travel hours away or own expensive equipment to begin exploring the universe.”

At each event, SEQAS members set up telescopes around the reserve and invite visitors to take a look at the night sky. Those who already own a telescope can get help with setup, alignment and finding objects. Beginners are welcome to move between telescopes, ask questions and view the moon, planets and star clusters up close at their own pace.

SEQAS President Damian Fletcher said the experience could be memorable for first-time observers.

“For many people, looking through a telescope for the first time can be a powerful experience,” Damian said.

“There is nothing like hearing that loud gasp as a child sees the wonders of the universe for the first time.”

Founded in 1989, SEQAS promotes the science and study of astronomy across South East Queensland through observing and educational activities. Urban Observers is one of its key public outreach programs, designed to encourage curiosity and make astronomy accessible to everyone.

The events are open to all ages and experience levels, with no cost to attend, no membership required and no need to bring equipment. Families are especially welcome.

Sessions are weather-dependent, so visitors are encouraged to check the SEQAS Facebook page for updates. See the full calendar of events at SEQAS Events page.
