Three generations from one particularly musical family will take to the stage together for the first time at the 99.7 Bridge FM fundraiser, Rockin’ the Bridge, this month.
The fundraiser will be held at the Sandgate and District Senior Citizens Centre on 25 July.
Jim Hansen and The Sonics guitarist Garry McDonald (70s) will be joined by his son Ian McDonald (41) on saxophone and granddaughter Jessica Bowman (18) on vocals in what promises to be a special family performance.
It’s a moment Garry has hoped would happen for many years.
“I’m very excited and very proud to be sharing the stage with my son and granddaughter for the first time,” Garry said. “It’s something I’ve been trying to organise for a long, long time, but Ian and Jess have both always been too busy.”
A love of music has connected the family for decades, with Garry performing professionally for more than 50 years and both Ian and Jessica following in his musical footsteps.
“It’s been a while since I’ve played with Dad and I’m excited too,” Ian said. “I’ve watched Jess grow from a young singer to the talented star she is now, so it will be wonderful to share the stage with them.”
For Jessica, preparing for the performance has been both challenging and exciting.
“I’ve watched a lot of their performances growing up, so being able to be in one is pretty cool,” Jessica said.
“I 100 per cent hope to keep joining them on stage in the future.”
More Than Music: Supporting Community Radio
The event will also serve as 99.7 Bridge FM’s inaugural Rockin’ the Bridge fundraiser, with proceeds helping support the community radio station’s operating costs and future equipment purchases.
Georgia Jones from Bridge FM said attendees could expect a fun night filled with live music, trivia, prizes, dancing and good food and drink.
“It’s all about supporting Bridge FM and giving the community something as well for a reasonable price,” Georgia said.
She said she and Garry came up with the name Rockin’ the Bridge together.
“It relates to 99.7 Bridge FM, the Hornibrook Bridge connecting Redcliffe and Sandgate, and also represents bridging the community,” she said.
That sense of connection is exactly what the night is all about for Garry.
“Music bridges decades and that’s the glue that holds us together,” he said.
