Flinders Parade is renowned for its sweeping bay views and beautiful historic homes, but the street also holds fascinating stories from Sandgate’s past.

Pattie Tancred from the Sandgate Historical Society said that their guided history walks of both Flinders Parade, as well the Bald Hills Cemetery, offered attendees a glimpse into the people and events that helped shape the area.

“We alternate the walks, so we do Flinders Parade one month and the cemetery the next,” she said. “Flinders Parade will be on July 25th, and we’ll do the cemetery again in late August.”

Each walk involves gentle strolling with stops to chat, followed by morning tea. As a former history student at the University of Queensland, Patti has enjoyed both guiding the walks and uncovering the stories of the area’s early residents.

“I enjoy sharing the fruits of my research with interested people,” she said. “History is just high-end stickybeaking!”

Discovering the Stories Behind Sandgate’s Landmarks

The foreshore walk goes from the Baptist Church to Cremorne at 154 Flinders Parade, and then backtracks to Meridian at 130 Flinders Parade, where participants are treated to morning tea on the veranda.

“There are lots of beautiful old houses, and their fascinating former owners and residents to talk about,” Patti said. “The Bald Hills cemetery is also very old and, like Flinders Parade, has some very interesting ‘residents’ – many of whom were significant in the history of Sandgate and led pretty ordinary lives but had not-so-ordinary things happen to them.”
