The Sandgate community is getting ready to say farewell to one of its most cherished institutions. After years of serving as a vibrant local hub, Bluenose Betty is closing its doors, but not without one final celebration.
On Friday, 16 May, the Northey family invites the community to a heartfelt farewell celebration, marking the memorable years they’ve shared together.
Opening in 2021 during COVID, the Northey family established Bluenose Betty as a place for locals to reconnect and feel at home.
Co-owner Ryan Northey said the venue was about more than food and drinks, it was about people.
“For us, the golden moments have come from the smaller, more meaningful interactions with people,” Ryan said. “Bluenose Betty has always been built around the locals. It really felt like we were part of something bigger – an important community.”
Known for its cosy atmosphere, Bluenose Betty was never about glitz or glamour, it was about heart. A place where people could escape the world for a while, catch up with familiar faces and feel at ease.
“So much of what we’ve done here has been centred around community,” Ryan said. “Our staff – many locals themselves – weren’t just pouring drinks, they were building relationships. That’s what made Bluenose Betty special.”
A New Beginning in Wilston
While closing wasn’t an easy decision, with the building now sold and Nexus Church soon to take over the space, Ryan believes it’s the right time for a change. But this isn’t goodbye, it’s the start of a new chapter.
“We’re not done!” he said. “We’ve picked up a new spot in Wilston. It’s called Frankie Brown on Kedron Brook Road in Wilston Village. It’s a cosy little corner bar and we’re putting all our love into making it feel just like home. A lot of Bluenose Betty’s soul will live on there.”
As they prepare to say goodbye, Christina, Darrin, Aunty Tan, Jade and Ryan feel nothing but gratitude.
“We just want to say thank you for everything,” Ryan said. “All the golden moments you’ve shared with us, we’ve felt them too. This has never been a one-sided connection. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you next time!”
The last day of trade will be Sunday, 18 May.
Tickets are $59. You can get your tickets here.
