This October marks a proud milestone for JKA Brighton Dojo as they celebrate their 25th anniversary.

Sensei John Cahill, who has led the dojo since its beginning, reflected on how far it has come since its inception and what has remained constant over the years.

“I started with only two students and we now offer five classes a week across all levels,” he said.

“We have many high-ranking students who started when they were just eight or nine, and I have one student, Luke, who started in 2009 as a six-year-old and is now a black belt and an assistant instructor. The most gratifying aspect for any instructor is to watch the students’ self-confidence grow – it can be an amazing transformation.”

John credits the dedication and support of the volunteer instructors, the students, and their families for keeping the club so strong.

“What has stayed the same over the years is our commitment to providing the best possible learning environment and instruction to all students regardless of age, ability, or gender,” he said. “We say karate is for everyone who wants it – everyone in the community is welcome.”

The Sensei’s Dedication

Of course, John is also very grateful to his own wife and family for supporting him in sharing his passion with others all these years.

“To keep lessons moving forward is terribly humbling and rewarding,” he said. “I am proud of the fact that we have 25 years of history.”
