Sandgate Library will close for roof repairs starting this month, with pop-up services ensuring the community stays connected during the restoration.
The library, located in Sandgate Town Hall, is expected to close from 7 October for six weeks as a safety precaution while the building works are carried out.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the Sandgate Library was a much-loved community space, and while the building was temporarily closed for roof restoration, residents could still access the services they relied on.
“We know how important libraries are for families, students and seniors, which is why mobile and pop-up services will keep books, activities and programs available for the community throughout the temporary closure,” Cr Schrinner said.
Alternative Services and Project Details
During the closure, Children’s Storytime pop-up sessions will be held at Einbunpin Park on Tuesdays from 7 October to 14 November, from 9.30am to 10.30am, weather permitting.
From 6 October, residents can also access the mobile library in the Decker Park car park in Brighton on Mondays, from 9.30am to 12pm.
Nearby libraries in Zillmere and Bracken Ridge will remain open during the temporary closure of the Sandgate facility.
While work is underway, crews will also repaint sections of the Sandgate Town Hall roof as part of ongoing maintenance.
These planned upgrades aim to protect the structure of the building and ensure it lasts for many years to come.
Council said the repairs had been scheduled to occur outside of the peak school holiday times, with work taking place between 6.30am and 6.30pm from Monday to Friday, and some Saturdays if needed.
Exclusion zones will be in place around the library for the duration of the works.
Chair for Customer Services, Councillor Sarah Hutton, said since opening more than 70 years ago, the library had remained a hub for locals, and this project was about keeping it that way.
“We’re investing in the future of the Sandgate Library and this roof restoration will ensure this popular space can continue to deliver more to see and do for generations to come,” Cr Hutton said.
“We’re investing more than 80 per cent of our budget in the suburbs, including Sandgate, to keep Brisbane the best place to live, work and relax.”
