Get ready, Sandgate – the team at Mr Henderson is pulling out all the stops to bring an authentic slice of Bavaria back to the bayside this October.

Co-owner Claire Hamlyn said she couldn’t be more excited about bringing their much-loved Oktoberfest back for its third year.

“Each year we put our own spin on it, but the highlight is always being able to bring authentic German beer, music, and food right here to Sandgate,” she said. “The community really embraces it, and it’s always such a fun day seeing everyone get into the spirit.”

This year, the venue will be transformed into a bustling Bavarian-style beer hall, complete with long tables both inside and out. On tap, guests can expect a mix of imported traditional German beers as well as German-inspired craft brews from local Australian breweries.

“To make it feel authentic, we’ll be pouring in true Oktoberfest style with steins, half steins, as well as the more familiar schooners and pots,” Claire said. “These German beers are a once-a-year treat – unique to Oktoberfest at Hendo’s.”

Claire said that guests could also look forward to a hearty German fare, as the kitchen would be offering a proper Bavarian feast.

“We’ll have bratwurst, spicy bratwurst, currywurst, and even a vegan wurst option, all loaded with traditional toppings like sauerkraut, mustard, and curry sauce,” she said. “To complete the experience, we’ll have freshly baked pretzels supplied by Jenny from Streusel German Sweets – a much-loved local business who makes the most delicious German treats.”

Music and Atmosphere

Of course, no Oktoberfest would be complete without a traditional Oompah band! Fan favourite T.N.T Brass will keep the atmosphere buzzing with a mix of traditional sets and current hits you’d expect at a Munich beer festival.

“They’ve performed at every Oktoberfest we’ve hosted, and the crowd absolutely loves them,” Claire said. “They are a fantastic group with some local members and they bring all the energy you’d expect from a Bavarian beer hall. And yes, dancing and dressing in costume is definitely encouraged!”

With the beer flowing, music pumping, and plenty of opportunity to try your hand at the Schuhplattler or the Polka, Mr Henderson’s Oktoberfest promises the perfect Bavarian-style party right here in Sandgate. Prost!
