Calling all history enthusiasts, geography buffs, art lovers and collectors – the Philatelic Society of Queensland (PSQ) is holding their Stamp Collectors Expo and Open Day on 1 June, and all are welcome to come along.
Mike Freeman, Vice President and Treasurer of PSQ said the society began life in Brisbane in 1921.
“We are over a hundred years old and keen to promote stamp collecting and to explore some of the more interesting avenues of what we call philately,” Mike said.
Mike explained that philately is not just about stamps.
“It also covers items that have been through the mail like the aerogrammes of the past, picture postcards and thematic displays that explore the world of science, art, medicine, or actually pretty much anything,” he said.
“My main passion is to collect from the Ottoman Empire.”
While the hobby tends to attract older people – some who have been collecting stamps their whole lives – Mike said they encouraged younger folks to come along and learn what it’s all about.
“The hobby appeals to people from all walks of life,” he said. “Those who are interested are most welcome to come along and to chat to stamp collectors and dealers.”
Stamp Collectors Expo – A Treasure Trove for Enthusiasts
The event will showcase exhibits as well as offer opportunities for guests to add to their collections.
“We invite other clubs to celebrate with us and bring exchange books full of stamps so that collectors can find items to fill gaps in their collections,” Mike said.
“We will also have a bargain table where you can buy stamps for very modest prices, as well as a sale by tender in the afternoon where whole collections or boxes of treasures are sold.
“There is great satisfaction in completing sets of stamps or gathering philatelic materials to tell a story – perhaps about a period in your country’s history, your favourite sports, or even about fabulous steam trains from the past. The possibilities are endless. The collector always enjoys the hunt to find and acquire something new.”
Entry to the event is free, and pre-registration is not required.
“We do ask that guests leave their names at the door and they will get a ticket for a chance at a door prize,” Mike said. “We are most grateful to Kedron-Wavell for hosting this event and we warmly welcome everyone to attend.”
